Camberwell Grammar

Project Highlights

Solar Panels: 2,650 frameless solar panels
Inverters: 33 x Fronius inverters
Power Production: Approx. 1,000,000kWh’s per year
Carbon Savings: 1200 Tonnes per year
Annual Savings: $150,000

In early 2018, Gippsland Solar installed the largest solar system on a school in Australia, a 888kW (2,650 panel) system across the Camberwell Grammar School precinct in Canterbury.

The impact of this system will be significant. It will generate around 1GWh (1,000,000 kWh’s) of renewable energy per year, reducing Camberwell’s environmental footprint by 1,200 Tonnes per year. And when the school is closed (particularly in summer), this system will export many hundreds of kW of solar electricity into the nearby grid, providing a critical service to reduce demand from traditional energy sources.

The project was driven entirely by the student council, who presented the idea to the board at Camberwell, demonstrating great student leadership from within.

As part of this project, Gippsland Solar also installed two ‘off grid classrooms’. Two of the science classrooms are powered entirely by solar and a pair of Tesla Powerwalls, with a TV screen showing their usage in the classroom. The two classrooms will compete on energy efficiency for 6 months, creating an extra level of educational value to the project.

The feedback from Camberwell Grammar at the completion of this project was overwhelmingly positive, with its board saying that Gippsland Solar’s tradesmen were some of the most professional they have ever worked with. They also praised our team for the ability to work on a large and heavily regulated site, with no interruption to school operation.

“It’s been a pleasure to work with the team at Gippsland Solar. The installation team worked exceptionally hard over our summer and autumn holidays, and delivered the project ahead of schedule, while having no impact on the operation of the school.

This is a large solar installation project – particularly so in the education sector. By producing around 1 million kWh’s per year from solar, we are very proud of what we have achieved, and very grateful to Gippsland Solar for its partnership.”
